LEADERSHIP
Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church
As we inch closer to re-opening our Church to in-person gatherings and worship, I would like to remind you that the reorganization of Saint Charles Borromeo Parish leadership is completing with the inauguration of our new Pastoral Council. You might ask - why is this important?
WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? Leadership is the work of every member of the parish, but it is entrusted to a few who represent all. Leadership then is the people – of God. The leadership of a Catholic parish is composed of three main bodies with whom the Pastor collaborates. These are the Pastoral Council (PC), the Finance Council (FC), and the Pastoral Staff (PS) (see Canon Laws 536, 537). Each of these bodies has specific and unique roles to play in order to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of a healthy Catholic Christian community. The roles come in two main forms: 1.) Planning or setting direction and long-term goals; 2.) Implementing or executing strategies and objectives that result in the goals.
PASTORAL AND FINANCE COUNCILS: The role of the two councils (PC and FC) is the planning and setting of pastoral and financial goals of the parish respectively. Specifically, they meet regularly to set pastoral and temporal goals. And, using those goals, they monitor and evaluate reports from the Pastoral Staff. Finally, they advise the Pastor on the direction of the parish. To fulfill their role, for example, the PC members listen to and channel parishioners’ views, wishes, and concerns at the council’s discussions. At the same time, PC members also help to explain adopted decisions on pastoral activities to the parishioners.
PASTORAL STAFF: The role of the staff is mainly executive. They collaborate with the Pastor on the level of day-to-day leading of the Church. The PS takes up the goals set by the councils and implement them through strategic and measurable objectives or pastoral actions. The PS also presents periodic reports to the councils for their oversight and evaluative responsibilities. Specifically, the day-to-day pastoral actions of the Church may be organized into three main ministries: 1.) Learning or Faith Formation – initial and on-going, 2.) Liturgy or Worship and Prayer, and 3.) Living or Service of needs – outside and inside our community. These three ministries summarize the nature and purpose of the Christian Church – the body of Christ.
YOUR PART IN LEADERSHIP: If you have any concerns, ideas, issues, or wishes regarding the Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic community, please send them to the Pastoral Council or contact a pastoral council member. This is how you share in the leadership of the Church. Of course, for personal spiritual and pastoral issues, contact the pastor, your spiritual director, or the parish office manager who will direct you to the appropriate pastoral staff.
KNOW YOUR PASTORAL COUNCILORS: Therefore, it is my joy as Parochial Administrator to formally introduce to you the newly inaugurated Pastoral Council of Saint Charles Borromeo: Mark Bales, John McCarthy, Stephanie Ferreira, Linda Trame, Michael Taranowski, Julie Gallagher Stear, Darlene Murphy, Jim Lucas, Christine Stuart, Roy Cavallini, and Matthew Breneman. The video of the inauguration of our Pastoral Council can be viewed below. Get to know the members; pray for them, and share with them your ideas.
May God bless Saint Charles Borromeo's community with selfless, dedicated, and compassionate leaders.
