Dear St. Charles Family,
We are still mourning the loss of our sister in Christ, Karen Miller, and are working on a plan for a celebration of Karen's life. I will keep you informed of any new details when they become available. Until that time, we will continue to pray a special prayer for Karen during every Mass.
As most of you are aware, India has seen a severely dangerous spike in COVID-19 cases and deaths in recent weeks. I am asking that you take time out of your day to pray for all of those who have been affected. Stay tuned for further information as we will provide links for those who wish to assist India more directly.
Meanwhile, I would like to announce that Holly O'Hagan, our new Communications Manager, has started working for the parish permanently. Among many other duties, Holly will administer my weekly flocknotes, beginning with this message. Jim will assist Holly during a brief transition and will continue as the backup administrator.
I would also like to remind everyone that Erwin Chiong's Cybersecurity Training Session will be held tomorrow evening, May 4th at 7:00 pm on Zoom. Please join us to ensure your cybersecurity in the future. Complete Zoom meeting details can be found below.
Finally, and with great excitement, I would like to introduce Diane Saunders, our new Director of Learning at Saint Charles Borromeo!
Diane comes to us from Arizona and is relocating to our part of the East Bay. Diane holds a Master's degree in Education and Theology from the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. She has served for a considerable time at the level of director in faith formation and spirituality, and catechist training. Diane has also been a presenter at the LA Congress.
Here at Saint Charles, Diane will be in charge of the entire learning area - or the prophetic pillar (initial and adult faith formation) - to ensure a comprehensive, consistent, and organic faith formation and evangelization program.
In her own words, Diane writes:
“My husband and I have been involved in Catholic education the whole of our adult lives. It has been a wonderful journey, raising our five children in an environment that nurtured vibrant faith, strong values, and confident leadership. They have thrived and we are most grateful…. My priority in the formation of catechists is to inspire a path toward Christian growth and development for their own lives. If they are excited and alive in their faith, their witness becomes the greatest teacher.

Parents and parish programs work together in a close partnership”

Since 2009, Fr. Edgerly has served as Pastor of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Piedmont. Prior to his appointment, he served as the parochial vicar and co-administrator of St. Paschal Parish in Oakland, the pastoral associate of St. Andrew-St. Joseph and St. Columba parishes in Oakland, and the parochial vicar of St. Ignatius Parish in Antioch.
In 1964, Fr. Edgerly attended St. Patrick Seminary in Meno Park. He was the first Black Seminarian in California. An Oakland native, Fr. Edgerly was ordained to the priesthood in 1984 at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Oakland.
Fr. Edgerly serves on the Diocesan School Board. He is on a committee tasked with building a study guide for Catholic schools and churches in the state to address systemic racism. Bishop Michael C. Barber has appointed Fr. Edgerly to lead the Diocese of Oakland Task Force for Racial Justice, which he has charged with examining the many ways the sin of racism effects the People of God in the Diocese.

The impact of the pandemic has been difficult for many people. The loss of income, the impact of social distancing, and the fear caused by COVID-19 have all had a negative impact on our wellbeing.
The Focus Areas for Wellbeing in 2021 are:
- Social Wellbeing
- Physical Wellbeing
- Mental Wellbeing
Social Wellbeing
Social Wellbeing refers to our ability to make and maintain meaningful positive relationships and regular contact with family, friends, work colleagues & neighbors.
Assessing Your Social Wellbeing
Ask Yourself:
- Do I schedule time with family & friends?
- Do I enjoy spending time with others?
- Are my relationships rewarding?
- Are my relationships positive?
A “no” answer to any of these questions may indicate that you need to work on an area of your social wellbeing. During the current restrictions maintaining all our social relationships has been difficult.
Physical Wellbeing
The benefits of physical wellbeing are well known. With regular exercise & healthy eating you can:
- Reduce your risk of a heart attack
- Manage your weight
- Maintain lower cholesterol level
- Lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers
- Have lower blood pressure
- Have stronger bones, muscles, and joints and lower risk of developing osteoporosis
- Feel better – with more energy, a better mood, feel more relaxed and sleep better.
Mental Wellbeing
Your mental wellbeing is about your
thoughts and feelings and how
you cope with the ups and downs
of everyday life.
Mental wellbeing is not the same thing as mental health, although the two can influence each other. Long periods of low mental wellbeing can lead to the development of mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. If you are living with a mental health condition, you may experience low mental wellbeing more often, but there will also be long periods where you’re able to maintain good mental wellbeing.
It’s important to understand that good mental wellbeing is not the absence of negative thoughts and feelings, because difficult and challenging situations are a fact of life. Instead, it's about being able to understand and manage the negative feelings so that you’re able to:
- Feel confident
- Build and maintain positive relationships
- Have a sense of purpose
- Live and work productively
- Cope with the normal stresses of day-to-day life
- Manage when things change
