Justice for Suba: The Spirit of Generosity in Action
Happy Birthday, Church! Sunday was Pentecost which is the fiftieth day after Christ rose from death. It is the day the fearful companions of Christ rose from death or injustice to life and justice. This is how the Church, the first household of Christ, was born. God’s Spirit, “ruah” or breath or wind blew and moved the companions into fearless action. They did justice for ALL human nations.
On this Pentecost, we celebrate the coming of God’s Spirit. Together we at Saint Charles Borromeo recognize that God’s Spirit continues to move the hearts of our families. Two years ago, the Holy Spirit showed her presence among us in the form of generous giving in our Church. Our Saint Charles family, led by Fr. Mark, raised over $151,000 which was much more than the goal of $61,000. Indeed, this show of generosity is proof because it is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
This generous gift of treasure was targeted at renovating and breathing life into the Suba Orphanage. This orphanage is located in a village called Bondo Nyironge in the Eastern African country of Kenya. The orphanage cares for children (ages 1 to 18 years old) most of whom have lost both parents to HIV/AIDS. Some of the children have disabilities, and all the children are vulnerable. Due to lack of funding the orphanage could not support the over 380 children in dire need. Father Eliud Otunga, a priest of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ (the Passionists), runs the Suba orphanage. In 2019 he wrote about the needs as follows:
"Water: The orphanage has no permanent water system. It depends on guttered roof water collected during rainy seasons.
Renovation: Most buildings in the orphanage need renovation: the hall, kitchen, dormitories, and bathrooms. The home also needs new beds, closets, and bedding.
New buildings: The home needs a smaller kitchen, dining, laundry house, and clotheslines. The home also needs two dormitories for the school section, which is meant for its self-sustenance.
Perimeter wall: For the security of the children, especially in their dorm, there is a need for a perimeter wall to separate the orphanage from the school” (Fr. Eliud).
In December 2019, we began to fund all the above projects with the help and work of our Suba Orphanage Board. We also want to acknowledge Karen Miller who participated in the initial work of the board. Currently, we have fully funded all the approved projects to the tune of $105,000. Discussions are ongoing regarding funding the Orphanage’s other projects with the $46,000 excess funds.
Fr. Eliud has sent a thank you message to all the parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo, “We thank the community of St. Charles Borromeo and the board for the continued support even in these difficult moments.”
All this would be impossible without God’s Spirit at work in our hearts. I ask all Saint Charles members to observe this as a thanksgiving to God for making us a true Church that has accomplished this work of justice. It is justice because our generous giving is restoring the wholeness and the humanity of children thousands of miles away. May God continue to fire us up to see our way forward in serving the needs of ALL humanity, just as the Holy Spirit empowered the early disciples to preach to ALL peoples.
