It is said that people wake up to God’s invitation during time of great love or suffering. On the first day of Spring in 2018, Jim discovered that his wife Josephine had died by suicide. In the nearly four years since experiencing what Jim describes as the worst day of his life, he has been on a path to recovery through surrender to God’s will for his life and his inherent presence in all of us. This is the story of how Jim is rebuilding his life – with God’s help.
Jim met Josephine on Valentine’s Day in 1971, and fell in love at first sight. Promising to marry after college, they attended San Diego State University and graduated in 1981. Both earned BS degrees, Josephine’s in Physical Education and Elementary School Science and Jim’s in Business Management. They moved to Boise, Idaho for Jim’s first job with Hewlett-Packard, and started their family: son William and daughter Jessica. Following job promotions with Hewlett-Packard, the family moved to San Diego in 1992 and Bergamo, Italy in 1994. In 1997 they moved to Livermore to be closer to Josephine’s parents. Jim worked for Hewlett-Packard for 20 years and is semi-retired. He still works occasionally as a Business Strategy Consultant.
After Josephine’s tragic passing, Jim found comfort in the arms of his neighbors, Donna and Bill Leach, and eventually into the loving care of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Community. Jim is active in ministry at St. Charles. He is involved in Hospitality, serves as Chief Steward of Men of Faith, and served for a year on the pastoral council.
