2022 Community Interfaith Student Support Program (CISSP)
Backpack Project Update
Participants of the 30th year of the CISSP backpack project included members from the following Livermore congregations: Asbury United Methodist, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal, First Presbyterian, Congregation Beth Emek, Holy Cross Lutheran, Baha’i Faith, the Islamic Center of Livermore, and St. Charles Borromeo and St. Michael Catholic Churches.
Despite the continuing COVID pandemic, volunteers were able to gather in person and successfully fill and distribute 1,095 backpacks to Livermore schools for children of families in need.
Some milestone dates:
·6/21/22: Our distributor, Uniforms Direct Inc., delivered the backpacks and school supplies to St. Charles to fill those backpacks, which were picked up, sorted, and counted by the 10 congregations.
·8/3/22: St. Charles parishioners gathered to unpack supplies and set up the assembly lines for filling packs. We extend special thanks to our Youth Ministry, Granada football Coach Franco, some of his players, and some personal friends.
·8/4/22: Twenty-seven parishioners gathered in assembly lines to fill 287 elementary, 15 middle/high, and 55 kindergarten backpacks. Then, all 357 packs were moved for storage until school delivery day.
·8/16/22: St. Charles parishioners, including several members of the Social Concerns Committee and the leaders and members of Scout Troup 2942, volunteered to load and deliver backpacks to schools which were done safely and in a record time of two hours.
Feedback from the schools, and those who delivered, was very positive with many “thank you” and grateful comments from the school staff and families who received the packs. We thank the Child Welfare and Attendance specialists at each school for organizing the distribution of the packs to students before school started.
I am ever thankful to the many parishioners of St. Charles who provided prayers, donations, and their time to volunteer and help to complete this year’s project. We were able to fulfill our commitment of 357 filled backpacks, as well as help purchase scientific calculators that were delivered to the middle and high school math departments, to distribute to their students in need. A special shout out to our office manager, Mary Hengl, and all the support and printing she provided!
We are so blessed with the generosity of the parishioners of St. Charles! Your prayers and service to this project are the perfect expression of God’s love, who has watched over this project since its beginning 30 years ago!
With blessings, peace, and love,
Sue Putnam
