Dear St. Charles Borromeo Family:
Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough: In the news this morning, I learned of the local but globally significant accomplishment of fusion ignition. This is the culmination of over 60 years of planning, research, and very challenging work performed by many local scientists and engineers - some of whom are our own parishioners!
On December 5, 2022, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's experiment "surpassed the fusion threshold by delivering 2.05 megajoules (MJ) of energy to the target, resulting in 3.15 MJ of fusion energy output, demonstrating for the first time a most fundamental science basis for inertial fusion energy (IFE)."
"Many advanced science and technology developments are still needed to achieve simple, affordable IFE to power homes and businesses, and DOE is currently restarting a broad-based, coordinated IFE program in the United States. Combined with private-sector investment, there is a lot of momentum to drive rapid progress toward fusion commercialization."(You may read the entire article here.)
Deacon Dave Cloyne, John Severyn, Mike Taranowski, John Celeste, and Vaughn Brugman are among the many contributors who work (or previously worked) within the National Ignition Facility at LLNL. Congratulations!
Adult Bible Study: I look forward to seeing everyone on Zoom at 7:00 p.m. THIS Thursday, December 15, for the third session of my Adult Bible Study Series, “TORAH: How Our Faith Began." To prepare for the upcoming session, be sure to download this HANDOUT for SESSION #3. The Zoom link can be found below.
