What an amazing turnout we had for sorting crayons for The Crayon Initiative! On Saturday, August 5, over 20 volunteers donated their time and talent. We thank everyone for coming out to support our cause!!!
We are happy to report that our group sorted 180 pounds of crayons!!! That is the equivalent of 7,200 new crayons or 900 new boxes of crayons to be shipped to children's hospitals. Thanks to each of you for giving 900 children a reason to smile. As an added environmental benefit, we diverted 180 pounds of crayons from our local landfills!
The Crayon Initiative (TCI) is a Danville, California non-profit organization whose mission is to bring happiness to children fighting childhood illnesses in hospitals. They do this by recycling used crayons from schools, restaurants, and families, and repurposing them into brand-new boxes of crayons. The recycled crayons are donated to over 250 children's hospitals throughout the United States. This provides smiles to children in hospitals and allows them to express themselves during their treatment and/or recovery. It's a simple form of creative therapeutic play for the children and helps them cope with their illnesses.
To learn more about The Crayon Initiative visit their website. There are many opportunities to support TCI through your time, talent, and/or financial contribution. TCI is fully supported by volunteers and sponsors to maintain the production and shipping of crayons. On average, the cost is approximately $1.50 to sort, produce, and ship a new box of crayons to a children's hospital. If you are interested in providing financial support (no amount is too small) please check out the Lori Deselms Fundraising page: Fundraising for The Crayon Initiative.
This event was coordinated by Help in Action, a local community organization whose mission is to encourage volunteerism by providing trusted resources and opportunities to serve those in need to create a better world one good deed at a time.
