Dear Saint Charles Borromeo Family:
I am pleased to announce the first OCIA class of the season, which will be held tomorrow, September 13, at 6:00 p.m. in the Benedict room. I invite all interested parishioners and guests to attend this adult faith formation ministry to help strengthen your understanding of our faith and to obtain the sacraments of baptism, communion, and confirmation during the Easter Season.
Through the sacrament of Baptism during Sunday's 11:30 a.m. Mass, we welcomed Mateo Emiliano Romero-Mendiola as the newest member of our Saint Charles community. Let us also congratulate Mateo's parents and Godparents!

Nine additional children will be baptized this coming Saturday at 11:00 a.m. during our special Rite of Baptism for Children ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend, and a video of the ceremony will be live-streamed.

Thanks to our knowledgeable and proactive Health Ministry led by Maria Gamulo-Owen, members of our staff and I received valuable CPR training this morning. Our session was lively and informative. In the future, our Health Ministry plans to provide this training to all parishioners who are interested. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements!
In the meantime, please watch our Health Ministry's video to learn all about Cardiac Arrest, CPR, AEDs, and the American Heart Association's "Chain of Survival."
Prime Time Lunch Bunch:
At noon today, I was pleased to attend the very first Prime Time Lunch Bunch event for seniors. The food was plentiful and delicious, the fellowship was warm and enlightening, and the overall event was a great success. I particularly appreciate and thank the new core team - Judy Reed, Mary Keller, Sharon Dec, and Sharon Murphy, plus our own Social Events Team led by Jeanine Builta, as they helped immensely with all of the preparations!
The next Prime Time Lunch Bunch event will be held on Tuesday, October 17, and will include an informative presentation in addition to the luncheon and fellowship. Although the program is geared toward seniors, all parishioners are invited!

2023 Community Student Support Program Backpack Project
On behalf of the CISSP Backpack Project and the St. Charles Social Concerns Committee, we offer a heartfelt “Thank You” to all who have helped make the 31st year of this project another huge success! In conjunction with eight interfaith congregations in Livermore, the CISSP project provided 1,000 Livermore students of families in need, TK/kindergarten through 12th grade, with a new backpack full of supplies for their first day of school. Through your continued generosity and prayers, St. Charles was able to fill and distribute 101 middle-/high-school, 76 elementary, and 155 kindergarten backpacks.
We are ever grateful to the parishioners of St. Charles who spread their generosity by donating funds for backpacks and supplies and volunteering to help at the backpack table after Masses; transporting and unpacking supplies and setting up the assembly lines; participating in filling 332 backpacks; and distributing the filled backpacks to Livermore schools. This project could never have happened without your help!
A special thank you to students of our Youth Ministry program, members of the Granada High Varsity football team, and members of Scout Troop 2942 who helped carry and unpack huge amounts of supplies and backpacks. Also, my gratitude goes out to Mary Hengl who supported this program by answering questions, preparing identification tags for 1,000 backpacks, and patiently helping whenever asked.
God has blessed this project once again through your annual support, generosity, prayers, and the gift of your time!

JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF
Those who suffer the loss of a loved one due to death experience grief. It is completely normal—but not easy. This experience can be painful, confusing, and overwhelming. Each person’s response to grief is unique, but there are certain universal aspects of grief that we all share.
The Grief Support Ministry at St. Charles provides the opportunity to meet with others on the same journey. When we allow others to help us carry our burden of grief it can lighten our load, even if it is just a little. Being with others and hearing them express their feelings and experiences can provide perspective on our own situation, give us support and guidance during our journey, and provide for healing over time. We never get over missing our loved ones, but in time learn to live our lives with the memories while moving forward.
We provide a Grief Support Group on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the St. Ignatius room of the Keeley Center. It is facilitated by Mary Ruth Cross, MFT, and Claire La Scola - a retired RN and MFT, both parishioners. If you would like more information, you may contact Claire at 925-447-9800.
The Grief Support Ministry of St. Charles/St Michael parishes will provide a Grief Support Workshop for six Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. starting September 21 and ending November 2, 2023. These meetings will allow you to explore your response to your loss in a safe, supportive environment. Sharing with others can lighten the burden.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. In recent years, society has become more open and there are more conversations about suicide. However, there is still a stigma surrounding it and suicide rates are still increasing. Approximately 44,000 people in the U.S. alone commit suicide each year.
Suicidal thoughts can plague anyone regardless of age, gender, or social status. Commonly linked to depression, there is no foolproof indicator.
Why is Suicide Prevention Month important?
• It promotes awareness. It provides the public with a conscious effort to talk about warning signs, prevention, and how to discuss this matter at work and within schools.
