Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
To pay too much attention to dreams is foolhardy. The inspired writer Sirach wrote “Dreams give wings to fools.” (Sir. 34:1) But, not all dreams are created equal. Some dreams are more than just unconscious renderings of our conscious lives. In some rare cases, dreams are inspired by visions from heaven. Mary and Joseph were “warned in a dream” not to return to Herod. The wife of Pilate warned him to release Jesus “for I have suffered much over him today in a dream.”
This later version, that of prophetic dreams, filled the life of St. John Bosco. The book, The Forty Dreams of St. John Bosco details some of these dream visions that he experienced.
St. John Bosco was an Italian priest who lived in the 19th century helping and educating youth, particularly disadvantaged young boys. Many of the vision-like dreams revolved around the state of the boys’ souls in his Oratory. The dreams often involved the boys with weapons in fierce battles against gruesome animals and beasts. The weapons were metaphors for the sacraments and devotions, while the animals and beasts were various sins and vices.

NOMINATE A WORTHY CAUSE OR CHARITY FOR FUNDING
The Social Concerns Committee is calling for requests from parishioners for funding of worthy causes. The committee manages 4.5% of parish plate collections and allocates parishioners’ generous donations to organizations that provide charity and social justice work locally, within the two county Oakland Diocese, the state, nationally, and internationally.
In 2023, the committee disbursed a total of $66,240 in one-time and quarterly grants. A total of $41,390 one-time grants were made to 28 agencies including Abode Services, Axis Community Health, and the Livermore School District Child Welfare Specialists and Kid Connection program. Also approved was a total of $24,850 in 15 grants payable quarterly to a variety of agencies, such as Culinary Angels, Elizabeth House, Goodness Village, Kids Bike Lane, Open Heart Kitchen, and three food pantries in Livermore.
If you would like to recommend an organization for funding as their parish sponsor, please call Mary 925-454-9919 or Marcia 925-321-0730. You will be emailed, and asked to complete and submit a MiniGrant application or Request for Funds form no later than Friday, November 1, 2024.
