~ Pilgrims of Hope ~
A Central Aspect of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year 2025
A pilgrimage invites us and helps us to seek spiritual renewal, reconciliation, and a deeper relationship with God. It helps us renew our faith, embrace mercy, and walk together as a global community of hope, reflecting Christ’s love in the world.
Pilgrims travel to holy sites, especially Rome, where they can pass through the Holy Doors of the four major basilicas, symbolizing a passage to grace and transformation.
Dioceses worldwide host local pilgrimages, ensuring broad participation. It encourages believers to embody hope by fostering unity, peace, and service within their communities.
Two Designated Locations:
- The Diocese of Oakland has named The Cathedral of Christ the Light and Mission San Jose in Fremont as two permanently designated sites for every day of the Holy Year. Pilgrims may come as individuals or arrange group pilgrimages with their parish. By making this pilgrimage, you may obtain the “Holy Year Plenary Indulgence”.
To Gain the “Jubilee Plenary Indulgence,” Pilgrims Must Complete the Following:
- Make a pious pilgrimage by visiting a designated site
- Go to confession
- Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father
(You may receive Holy Communion and make your confession during a 'grace period' of 20 days before or after your visit to a pilgrimage church.)
A “Plenary Indulgence” is Not a Forgiveness of Sins:
It's important to understand that a plenary indulgence does not forgive the sin itself, but rather the temporal punishment that remains as a consequence of that sin.
What are the temporal consequences of sin? The earthly penalties or sufferings that can result from sinful actions, even after they are forgiven.
Temporal consequences are often seen as corrective and educational, can manifest as suffering, challenges, and trials in one's life or as consequences experienced in the afterlife (Purgatory). They are not eternal/permanent; they are meant to motivate obedience and encourage penance for sins.
They can be applied to the living and the dead. A plenary indulgence can be applied to oneself/others, or souls in purgatory.
