Your Generous Giving Keeps St. Charles Open!
Jesus says in today’s gospel reading, “come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest...” Matthew 11: 28. If we are the body of Christ, the Church, then I think Jesus means that each one of us must find healing and security during pandemics, calm in times of social disturbance, and solutions to our problems.
In March, as we were about to be sheltered-in-place and close our Church buildings for worship, I came to you - the people of God - and sounded the alarm regarding our financial down-trend. We had entered the quarantine period with a huge annual budget deficit.
Due to unemployment suffered by our parishioners, we tabled our stewardship plan for suggesting an increase in the giving of time, talent, and treasure. At that point, we faced the inability to make payroll through May 2020. We faced the moral obligation to do right by our dedicated pastoral staff while living within the means of our projected income for the period of April through June 2020.
This led to our adjustment to staff through lay-offs, pay-reductions and trimming of hours for the shelter-in-place period. Those were real burdens, tribulations, and challenges which, I believe, afflicted not only our Church's staff members but also their families, who were grappled within the midst of an attempt to keep healthy and faith-filled.
As we re-open for in-person worship, I acknowledge to you, our St. Charles community that we - the “people who” are the body of Christ – were, fortunately, able to keep our own Church alive so that it could actually open.
You responded to the call by giving generously to give “rest” to our financial soul. I am not saying that we are financially out of the woods yet: the pandemic persists and many are still out of work or facing serious economic, social, and psychological problems induced by it.
Therefore, we are thankful to inform you that St. Charles Borromeo is financially "making it" through this pandemic so far. Our “thanks” giving of treasure has increased because many of our parishioners increased the amount of their weekly or monthly giving.
Here’s a representation of how you kept our Church open from April through June: In short, we now have a year-to-date net income of $12,737 instead of the $29,585 deficit we budgeted. This provided us with $42,322 above our previously planned performance.
As we open, we have many needs ahead of us - including new hiring for our liturgy and learning (faith formation) ministries. For those who cannot give now due to constraining situations in life, we pray for you and pray that you consider the giving of your talents and time – as a volunteer in ministry and leadership teams.
I encourage all others within our St. Charles family to use
Tithe.ly to make it even easier to thank God by giving and thereby keeping St. Charles open. Again, THANK YOU for thanking God in your giving to St. Charles!
