Heaven: “Not A Place Where… but A People Who…”
For most of us, going to heaven is the reason we are Christians. The real question is, what is our understanding of heaven? To unlock the meaning of heaven that Jesus teaches us today, I would like to use our St. Charles Borromeo slogan that states we are not a place but a people. Jesus describes heaven as an investment. This brings me to the conclusion that heaven is a lifestyle that we must live now and not after we die.
The thought of going to heaven sometimes makes it a place that seems to be beyond our reach, in the future, and far outside our time. In today's liturgy, God’s word reveals a heaven that is here right now. Heaven, the kingdom of God, is not a place but a people whose hearts are endowed by God's divine wisdom; a people who live the wisdom, the will, and the life of God.
In the first reading, God’s wisdom is given to Solomon to be used to govern the people of Israel of his time - not in the future. That wisdom is a lifestyle inspired by God’s authority and word. Heaven is that wise way of life.
Heaven is a life lived according to divine purpose, says the second reading from Paul’s letter to the Christian community in Rome. A divine purposeful life made up of thoughts, words, and actions that define a justified, blessed life. This kind of life is what Christians are called to live in this world so that the community of Christians itself is heaven here on earth.
The gospel reading is the epitome of the understanding that heaven is people. Jesus likens the kingdom of heaven to a treasure, a pearl, and to successful fishing. Here, Jesus emphasizes the preciousness of heaven, which is worth working for and investing in. Heaven is worth the investment of our entire livelihood. Every year of your life is worth spending on that pearl, that treasure, and that catch of fish.
This makes sense because, from the first reading, heaven is God’s wisdom, advice, and way of life. Even the responsorial psalm indicates that heaven is a lifestyle that is directed by God’s commands, which is also God’s Word. The wisdom of God is the will of God, the life of God, the command of God, and the word of God. So, in effect, Jesus indicates to us why we must give up all things for this wisdom.
If this wisdom and word of God became flesh, as John 1:14 tells us, then Jesus Christ is the kingdom of God and therefore Jesus Christ is heaven! Here, then, the Christian community, the body of Christ, the Church is the people endowed with heaven – the wisdom and word of God.
Therefore, heaven is Jesus’ own life. It is not in the future but can be lived here and now. The kingdom of God must start in our own world. We must begin to learn and continue to live as the people of God - in love, sharing, and caring for one another.
At the moment, we may be broken, disappointed, sheltered in place, jobless, struggling economically, physically ill, emotionally drained, politically confused and polarized, and perhaps spiritually tired. Such experiences may tempt us to dream of heaven occurring only in the future. Well, the word of God teaches us today, that even in these conditions of adversity, heaven can be lived now because heaven consists of the life and wisdom of God in Christ, who is always with us.
May this understanding of heaven inspire and encourage us to actively participate in God’s way of life, and may we make our own lives heavenly in all of its aspects. For we, the people of God, are the kingdom of God.
