In the same way, let your light shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and
glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
My Name is Mark Kotch, and I have been appointed as the Director of Living at St. Charles Borromeo Church. I am honored to serve the parishioners of St. Charles in this volunteer position. I am married to my best friend Theresa, and we celebrated 41 years of marriage in July. We have three grown children and proud to be called Grandpa and Grandma to nine grandchildren. My wife and I are new to St. Charles, joining the community in June of 2019. We knew after our second weekend that we had found a home. We hear people say that St. Charles is a small community. I see a community with a big heart and many people serving the Lord with their gifts and their love of serving others.
Growing up in my Catholic faith has been important to me. When living in Georgia as a teen, my love of serving others become important to me as I watched my Pastor, who was friends with Martin Luther King Senior, march with Martin Luther King Jr. several times over the years. This started my education into social justice issues that consumed the South. My Pastor inspired me to spend my summers in the inner city of Atlanta working with St, Vincent DePaul. I saw first hand the poverty and endless cycle that families found themselves in. This experience was life-changing and showed me the importance of serving others.
In the nineties, I continued my ministry to others by being a part of several nonprofits and on the board of some. During this time I wanted to show my kids the joy of serving others. So one Saturday a month, our family went to a soup kitchen to help prepare, serve, and clean up. We wanted our kids to see the needs and develop their own conscience as they grew up. It was important to Theresa and me that our kids experience real-life even including the sadder part of life.
I have spoken to almost every Living Ministry leader here at St. Charles. The list of ministries is impressive and our ministries include many “in-reach” and “outreach” programs for our parishioners and our larger community. What is most impressive is the knowledge and passion of those involved in their ministries. When I see on the front page of the bulletin “Not a Place Where...But a People Who,” I finish the statement with many words like Time, Talent, and Treasure. The Living ministries give of their Time and Talent to make all the difference in the lives of others.
My role as Director is to help each ministry grow and to report the activities of each ministry to the Parish Council and Pastor. I look at it as if I am their Marketing director to help them achieve the goals of their ministry. I look forward to COVID being over so we can meet again and the ministries can properly serve the St. Charles community and beyond.
Feel free to contact me with any questions. Please stay safe and healthy!
